In The Mail: To The Linksland
Arriving in the mail for review was a copy of the thirtieth anniversary edition of Michael Bamberger’s To The Linksland.
The book is Bamberger’s account of his salad days, when he quit his sportswriting job and set off with his new bride to pursue a job as a caddy in Europe.
He didn’t do badly, finding a bag to carry and caddying in the national championships of Portugal, France, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Ireland, and Scotland.
I do not recall having read To The Linksland before, but I certainly was aware of its existence, if only from having read and reviewed some of Bamberger’s other books, such as The Ball In the Air.
That the book is currently being republished in a 30th anniversary edition speaks well to its enduring legacy. It seems to me that Bamberger has pulled off what so many of us would like to: drop everything and head off on a life-changing golf experience.
The thirtieth anniversary of To The Linksland includes an introduction by Michael Murphy, the author of the legendary Golf In The Kingdom. If you have not read that, you should. For my part, I should find my copy and reread that one for a review.
I look forward to reading To The Linksland, and will have a review as soon as I finish.
