March 25 Is Tolkien Reading Day

Growing up, my favorite books were the works of JRR Tolkien. Those led to my playing Dungeons and Dragons in the late 1970s and a lifetime at my other hobby: tabletop gaming. All the cool kids are playing hobby board games these days, but I have been at it for forty years.

Today is “Tolkien Reading Day,” in honor of the destruction of the One Ring in year 3019 of the Third Age.

In honor of Tolkien Reading Day, I’ve got a few golf-Tolkien intersections:

Read about how a hobbit invented golf, from Tolkien’s The Hobbit.

A golf course in Maryland is called Hobbit’s Glen.

You can stay in a hobbit house at the Preserve Sporting Club in Rhode Island and play their 18 hole “Mountain” course.

Michigan’s Stoatin Brae golf course has a halfway house that is largely underground as a sort of modern day hobbit house.

The halfway house at Stoatin Brae is built into the ground, invisible from the surrounding holes. It is affectionately known as the Bunker.
