MARSHALL – The Medalist Golf Club, considered as one of architect Bill Newcomb’s finest designs, will take on the finest time-tested golfers in Michigan when it hosts the 7th GAM Super Senior Championship Wednesday and Thursday.

A field of 76 GAM golfers ages 65-and-over will compete in the 36-hole stroke play championship, which crowns an overall Super Senior champion and presents a Legends Division for golfers ages 70-and-over. In addition a prize is awarded to the low score by a player ages 75-and-over.

The Medalist, a popular public venue that was founded in 1996, stretches across 275 acres of rolling wooded lands and includes some wetlands areas golfers must negotiate.

The course is tournament-tested having hosted the 2011 Michigan Junior State Amateur Championship, the 2001 Michigan Women’s Amateur Championship and several USGA qualifiers among other events.

Newcomb created a course that can be played between almost 7,000 yards and 5,149 yards with doglegs, split fairways and multiple wetlands and ponds that are in play, but also designed essentially seven sets of tees to make golfers of all abilities comfortable.

Last year Rick Herpich of Orchard Lake at age 67 shot a 66 and 70 to win by four shots at Owosso Country Club. The 66 marked the first time the current GAM Super Senior Player of the Year shot his age. Terry Westbrook of Grand Rapids won the Legends Division.

Herpich will defend his title, as will Westbrook, and two-time champion Ian Harris of Bloomfield Hills (2018, ’19), 2016 winner John French of Santa Monica, Calif., and 2015 winner Terry Moore of Grand Rapids are also playing.
