Playing Thunder Bay Golf Resort In Hillman, MI

I recently got out to play a round at Thunder Bay Resort in Hillman, Michigan.

I have seen the resort’s booth for many years at the Novi golf show. In addition to golf, they advertise RV hookups, suites villas and chalets, elk viewing, murder mystery weekends and carriage and sleigh rides.

I can only speak to the golf.

The course is a parklands design, with the front nine being relatively open, and the back nine getting much tighter. The front nine, therefore, serves as a warmup to the back.

Unfortunately, was started on the back nine, so my first drive was a dogleg through a tunnel of trees.

That didn’t turn out well.

I was behind several slow foursomes and eventually paired up with a guy named Dan who has been a course superintendent at several Michigan locations. It was a fun afternoon talking golf design and maintenance.

The course was in decent shape, although the grass in the fairways was longer than I would have liked and the greens were quite slow.

Overall, the course was fun, but nothing to go out of my way to play.

I’ll have a full review and photo tour in the future.

  1. I know you said you can only speak to the course, but considering this as our “golf trip” destination for 2024. Eight guys, two nights, one round each day (we like to have a good time). Would you recommend? The current GroupGolfer deal (1/19/24) seems too good to be true.
