A look at the 2012 RBC Canadian Open
Following an opening-round, 8-under 62 at Hamilton G&CC last year, Scott Piercy posted scores of 67 in rounds two through four to claim a one-stroke win over Robert Garrigus and William McGirt. Piercy’s 62 was the low round of the tournament. En route to his first PGA TOUR win at the 2011 Reno-Tahoe Open, Piercy also posted the low-round of the tournament, a career-best, 11-under 61. With his win, Piercy earned a berth into the following week’s World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational (T19).
Piercy came into last year’s RBC Canadian Open firing on all cylinders. In his two previous starts leading to Canada, Piercy posted four rounds in the 60s at The Greenbrier Classic (T12) and John Deere Classic (3rd).
Piercy’s 67 Sunday at Hamilton was his 12th consecutive round in the 60s. A week later, he opened with a 1-under 69 at the Bridgestone Invitational to stretch the streak to a career-record-tying 13.

Piercy comes to this year’s RBC Canadian Open with 18 starts under his belt. Among them are three top-10 finishes, highlighted by a third-place finish at the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Piercy, who missed the cut last week at The Open Championship, is 57th in the FedExCup standings.
Piercy will be making his fourth RBC Canadian Open start. Before last year’s win, he finished T6 at Shaughnessy G&CC in Vancouver. In 2009, he finished T40 the last time the RBC Canadian Open was contested at Glen Abbey GC.
In 12 competitive rounds at the RBC Canadian Open, Piercy has yet to post a score worse than par.
RBC Canadian Open and the FedExCup
With just four weeks remaining before the start of the FedExCup Playoffs, the RBC Canadian Open will once again play a pivotal role in the shaping of the Playoff fields.
2012 winner Scott Piercy jumped from No. 36 to 13 in the standings and qualified for all four Playoff events including the season-ending TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola.
2011 winner Sean O’Hair jumped from No. 147th to No. 43 and qualified for the first three Playoff events
2010 winner Carl Pettersson’s win moved him from No. 55 to 16th in the standings, good for a berth into the first three Playoff events.

Player notes
2012 FedExCup champion Brandt Snedeker is poised to make his fifth RBC Canadian Open start. Of his previous four starts, he has collected top 10s in 2007 (T7) and 2009 (T5). At No. 4 in the FedExCup standings thanks to seven top-10 finishes including a victory at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am,
Snedeker is on track to become the only defending FedExCup champion to make it to the TOUR
Championship presented by Coca-Cola, the Playoff Finale, the following year. Snedeker captured the RBC Canadian Open’s sister tournament, the RBC Heritage, in 2010.
Scheduled to make his seventh start at the RBC Canadian Open, Matt Kuchar comes to Canada this week in search of win No. 3 on the year. Kuchar has wins at the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship and the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide Insurance. Kuchar, No. 3 in the FedExCup standings, comes to Canada this week with six top 10s in 16 starts.
345Four-time major champion Ernie Els is scheduled to make his fifth start at the RBC Canadian Open. Els sits 90th in the FedExCup standings, his one top-10 finish being a T4 at the U.S. Open.
Graeme McDowell, the 2010 U.S. Open winner, captured the RBC Heritage earlier this year and sits 26th in the FedExCup standings.
Billy Horschel, winner of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans earlier this year, is tied for second on TOUR
with seven top-10 finishes.
Two-time RBC Canadian Open champion Jim Furyk will make his 11th start north of the border. Furyk returns to Canada with 15 starts this season, in which he has made 13 cuts. His best finishes of the season are T3 at the Valero Texas Open and T7 at the Tampa Bay Championship.
Dustin Johnson comes to Canada this week having made 15 starts, where he has collected one win and an additional two top-10 finishes. In the season’s first event, Johnson claimed his seventh PGA TOUR title at the rain-shortened Hyundai Tournament of Champions. He also finished T4 at the Shell Houston Open and T10 in defense of his FedEx St. Jude Classic title.
Woody Austin, who played for the U.S. Team in the 2007 Presidents Cup in Montreal, returned to the PGA TOUR winner’s circle last week with a playoff victory at the Sanderson Farms Championship.
Miscellaneous RBC Canadian Open notes
For the first time since 2009, the RBC Canadian Open makes a return to Glen Abbey Golf Club. This will mark the Golf Club’s 26th time to host Canada’s national championship. Glen Abbey was first site of the RBC Canadian Open in 1977 (Lee Trevino). It was the Open’s regular host each year from 1981-2000, with the exception of 1997 (Royal Montreal GC). Past champions at Glen Abbey include Greg Norman (1984, 1992), Curtis Strange (1985, 1987), Nick Price (1991, 1994) and Tiger Woods (2000).
Since 2000, three of the 12 different winners have made the RBC Canadian Open their first on the PGA TOUR – John Rollins (2002), Chez Reavie (2008) and Nathan Green (2009).
Since 1990, only two players have won the RBC Canadian Open twice: Nick Price (1991, 1994) and Jim Furyk (2006, 2007). Since the event’s 1904 inception, only six players have successfully defended their RBC Canadian Open title. The only player to achieve the feat in the last 50 years has been Jim Furyk (2006, 2007).
In the post-World War II era, only 15 players have won the RBC Canadian Open more than once.
