Stance sent a large selection of their Performance Sport Mid Cushion socks for review in late summer, but warm weather kept me from testing them on the course. I am not wearing crew socks with shorts. The weather here in Michigan has turned in the last couple of weeks, though, and I’ve been able to give them a workout in proper trousers.

In short, the Stance Performance Crew socks are terrific. They are my new favorite brand of crew socks.

The yarn used in the knit is as soft as any I have encountered short of those fuzzy plush socks people get out for winter loungewear. Above the ankle, the Stance socks look like any other standard dress sock. They are entirely appropriate for anything from country club casual to the board room.

The yarn is 66% nylon, 25% polyester, 6% cotton and 3% elastine.

The Stance socks really have three different knits invoved: plush padded areas, snappy elastic and mesh.

Plush padding is to me most noticable in the high impact areas on the soles. That’s appreciated.

In placement of the different types of knits, Stance seems to have paid a lot of attention to areas that commonly develop hot spots and blisters. There is reinforcement and padding on the back of the heel, where the cup, tab and collar frequently rub. Extra padding also is present on the inside ankle area where the tongue of a shoe could do some damage.

A seamless toe closure keeps the socks from rubbing in that area.

I have had no problems with hot spots — much less blisters — over multiple rounds walking the hilly terrain at Washtenaw Golf Club (course link).

The middle area has some extra elasticity for arch support. That helps keep the socks in place. They don’t slip or slide in my shoes.

The instep area of the sock is a lighter weight mesh. Stance’s promotional materials talk about “performance mesh for optimized ventilation and breathability.” That’s got to be the area they are talking about.

Stance says that the yarn is treated with “Freshtek Odor Control,” a antimicrobial finish with moisture wicking properties. My feet are not getting sweaty, so there must be something to that moisture wicking claim.

The company also says its socks will be quite durable over the long haul. Indeed, Stance says that its “Infiknit durability” is guaranteed for life.

I hope they do last. I really like these socks, and intend to wear them to work, as well as for many miles of cool weather golf.
