Test Driving The Nike Covert At Golf Galaxy.

Every weekend this month, Nike and Golf Galaxy are offering golfers the chance to test drive the new Nike VR_S Covert Drivers. A Nike representative will give you a fitting, run your numbers and make recommendations for models, shafts and settings. You’ll receive a free sleeve of Nike 20XI golf balls just for participating!

I took a trip this afternoon down to the Golf Galaxy store in Toledo, Ohio to find out how the Nike Covert would fit my own game. There, I met Golf Pro and Nike Brand Ambassador Dave Rosinski, who took some basic information and then put me to work in a driving bay.  I am quite rusty after a long winter’s layoff, but Dave patiently worked me through dozens of shots with the VR_S Covert and Covert Tour in various combinations of shafts and settings. On each shot, he recorded swing speed, ball speed, carry distance, total distance, spin and other variables. Then, he showed me the results on the screen, deleted the outliers and showed me the difference between the models.

My best results were with the VR_S Covert Tour and a regular shaft at 10.5 degrees of loft. I’ll get the exact specifications later in an email from Nike.

I really like the bright red head of the Covert, and while some have complained about the off-center swoosh at the bottom, I didn’t notice it at all. Something else you don’t notice—even from behind the club—is the cavity. It is out-of-sight and out-of-mind.

Testing the Nike Covert was a worthwhile experience, and if there’s a Golf Galaxy near you (check their store locator), you should give it a shot.
