Teacher’s Comments: A friendly, inexpensive, neighborhood course
I had a good time at Tomac Woods. It’s an inexpensive, unassuming course that — if I lived in the neighborhood –I would be happy to play on a regular basis.
Tomac Woods was built in 1964, and has been a family operation ever since.
As with many Michigan courses, Tomac Woods is a tale of two nines. The front nine is relatively open, with spacious fairways and little trouble. The back nine is more tight and wooded. There, balls are in great danger of being lost.
Tomac Woods’ holes are all relatively straightforward. Elevation changes are created by a hill on the west half of the course. Several of the holes have blind tee shots. There are no water hazards of note, only a few sand traps to worry about.
A neat feature of the course are stone walls that likely date back to the farms of the 19th century. The walls add a bit of character and charm.
From the back tees, Tomac Woods stretches to 6, 382 yards. No slope or rating were given. The middle tees come in at 6, 190, while the front tees are at 5, 559.
With its large greens and straightforward approaches, a bogey golfer should have a good round here.
My favorite hole was the par 4 tenth. Beginning from a small hill, the hole dives down and left to a large green. The combination of elevation change and dogleg make it the most interesting hole on the course.
Another I enjoyed was the par 4 third (photo at top of page). This hole falls and then rises again to the green, while turning ever so slightly left. The movement of the fairway caught me by surprise. On a return visit, I would have a better placement on my tee shot.
Conditions on the day I played were mixed. The greens were in good shape, but many of the fairways needed TLC. There were, frankly a number of bare spots. On the back nine, among the trees, the course was more than a bit shaggy.

The sixteenth at Tomac Woods is a 157 yard par 3. The seventeenth at Tomac Woods is a 353 yard par 4. 
Eighteen at Tomac Woods is a 585 yard par 5.
