What Is The Average Price Per Golf Round In Each US State?

Online booking site Supreme Golf has taken a dive into its data and produced a report on the average price per round of golf in each of the US States. The data is based on 5.4 million rounds played in 2023 which presumably were booked through Supreme Golf.

Which state has the cheapest golf? Which is most expensvie?

With an average price of $14, Alaska is the king of low-priced rounds. That actually surprised me.

Nevada is the most expensive at $143. No surprise there.

The average price is $51. Median is $47. The Mode (most frequently occurring value) is $36.

Supreme Golf’s golf round pricing data interesting, but not definitive. According to the National Golf Foundation, there were 531 million rounds of golf played in 2023 in the United States. Supreme Golf’s sample is therefore only about 1% of the total.

Supreme Golf claims to have 13,000 of approximately 16,000 golf courses in the United States in their database. That sounds comprehensive, but I noticed that on two of my local favorites, the Supreme Golf course listing takes the web surfer to that course’s own internal site. I imagine that data from those sites were not included. More siginificantly, a number of local courses that I play do not show up in their search function at all.

It seems that the Supreme Golf round price data has a bit of a self-selection problem. The numbers seemingly only include courses that have signed up with Supreme Golf (and presumably offer discounts for the site).

I am not sure what this does to their data. The two cheapest golf courses I regularly play are not in their database. But the most expensive ones I play in fact are in the listings.

I personally find it hard to imagine that New York golf is on average cheaper than Michigan golf.

Still, it is an interesting data set that should provide some discussion.
