WVU Golf Schedule Announced

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (July 7, 2017) – The West Virginia University golf team will host a pair of tournaments, take a trip to Hawaii and continue a long rivalry as part of the 2017-18 schedule, announced by Director of Athletics Shane Lyons on Friday.

The Mountaineers will compete in 10 tournaments and one head-to-head matchup before embarking on the postseason at the 2018 Big 12 Championship. The squad returns three starters from last in Max Sear, Etienne Papineau and Tristan Nicholls.

“Every year, our schedule gets more and more competitive, and this year is no different,” coach Sean Covich said. “Our guys will experience some of the nation’s best courses from The Ocean Course, to Isleworth, Pete Dye Golf Club, Sawgrass, Royal Kan’anapli and Southern Hills. Our guys will be challenged week in and week out.”

WVU returns to Johns Island, South Carolina, to open the season at The Invitational at The Ocean Course on Sept. 11-12. The event will be hosted by the College of Charleston at Kiawah Island Resort, with 2017 marking the second straight year in attendance for the Mountaineers. The following week, the team makes a repeat appearance at the Janney VCU Shootout on Sept. 18-19 at the Country Club of Virginia’s Tuckahoe Course in Richmond, Virginia. Last season, Sear tied a program record by firing a 66 in the final round of the event.

West Virginia will host a home tournament at Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport, West Virginia, for the third year in a row. Formerly the Mountaineer Intercollegiate, WVU has paired with The Health Plan for The Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational on Oct. 9-10. The squad finished fourth at least year’s event.

The Mountaineers travel to Windermere, Florida, from Oct. 22-24 to cohost the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational with the University of Central Florida. The two programs will host the event at Isleworth Golf and Country Club, a prestigious community that consistently ranks as one of the nation’s top courses and has served as the home base for several of the PGA TOUR’s top golfers.

West Virginia will cap the fall season with a trip to Lahaina, Hawaii. The Mountaineers will compete in the Ka’anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational at the Royal Ka’anapali Course. The University of Hawaii will host the event from Nov. 3-5 on the island of Maui.

The slate resumes on Feb. 4 when the Mountaineers resume their longstanding rivalry with Penn State in a head-to-head matchup. The two teams started the series in 1941 and added Pitt and Syracuse into the mix for the Athletic Directors Trophy in 1971. The competition was disbanded soon after when three of the programs were discontinued, but the Mountaineers and the Nittany Lions resumed the event in 2017. WVU will look to avenge last year’s loss to PSU this February in Orlando, Florida, at a site to be determined.

The Mountaineers will make three straight trips to Florida, starting Feb. 11-13 at the Martin Downs Collegiate. UNCG will host the tournament at the Martin Downs Golf Club in Palm City, Florida. WVU returns to the Seminole Intercollegiate for the third straight season, Feb. 24-25, after setting several team and individual records last season at Southwood Country Club in Tallahassee, Florida. The Mountaineers’ time in the Sunshine State ends at the North Florida’s Hayt Invitational, March 18-19, at Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach. Sawgrass is rated by Golfweek as one of the Top 100 Courses in the U.S.

The first of two April tournaments will take place in Kannapolis, North Carolina, when WVU competes in Charlotte’s Irish Creek Collegiate at The Club at Irish Creek on April 7-8. The squad will cap the regular season on April 15-16, as the Mountaineers make their third straight trip to Penn State’s Rutherford Intercollegiate, held at the Penn State Blue Golf Course in State College, Pennsylvania.

West Virginia competes in its third Big 12 Championship from April 24-26. The 2018 tournament will be played at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Southern Hills as played host to three U.S. Open tournaments and four PGA Championships and is slated to host two more majors in the near future.
