WVU Takes Seventh at Ka’anapali

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Nov. 3, 2019) – Freshman Nico Lang picked up a top-20 finish as the West Virginia University golf team finished fall play with a seventh-place finish at the Ka’anapali Collegiate Classic in Lahaina, Hawaii, on Sunday.

The Mountaineers shot a four-under-par team score of 280 in the third and final round, putting them at 273-273-280=826. They finished in seventh place at 26-under-par. Big 12 foe Oklahoma took home top honors at 47-under, followed by Washington at 42-under-par. UCLA finished 35-under-par to round out the top three.

Lang tied for 18th place to earn the third top-20 finish of his young career. He used four birdies to shoot one-under-par in the third round for a total of 67-69-70=206, shooting seven-under-par.

Junior Mark Goetz started his round on hole No. 5, recording a pair of birdies early on. He bounced back from a double-bogey on No. 18 with a birdie on No. 1, finishing at one-under-par. Goetz tied for 25th with a 54-hole total of 69-68-70=207 at six-under.

Classmate Matthew Sharpstene carded six birdies on his way to a four-under-par 67 on the day, moving him up 14 spots in the standings. His total of 68-73-67=208 put him tied for 33rd place at five-under-par.

Senior Etienne Papineau shot 69-69-73=211 to finish two-under-par and in a tie for 46th place, while junior Logan Perkins carded a score of 69-67-76=212 to tie for 53rd place at one-under.

Playing as an individual, senior Philipp Matlari tied for 61st place at one-over-par. He shot 73-72-69=214 through three rounds of play,

West Virginia will take the next few months off before returning to the links on Feb. 2 in a head-to-head matchup with UConn in Orlando, Florida.
