I really like open ear headphones. For several years now, I’ve worn a Shokz headphone on nearly every round of golf, and always on my daily walks. (My goal is to get three to six miles of walking in every day, so I either get it through walking the course or the neighborhood).

I was very much intrigued, then, when 1MORE offered a pair of Open Earbuds S70 for review.

Rather than a single unit connected by a springy cable like the Shokz, the S70 has two separate ear-pieces. Each loops over the ear, with the speaker portion sitting in front of the ear.

I will spare you the sight of the earbuds on my ears and instead show you a professional model from 1MORE’s press release.

Sound on the S70 is excellent for the sort of podcasts I listen to when walking and playing golf. I get some strange looks when people ask what I’m listening to on the course. It’s mostly economic and political news and opinion. I can’t help it. With a Masters Degree in Public Policy Analysis, working in think-tanks in D.C. and thirty years of teaching government and economics, it’s just the way my brain is wired.

Don’t judge me. I find it relaxing.

One thing I know for sure, though: You don’t want to hear my playlist any more than I want to hear yours. That’s why God gave us headphones.

And as headphones on the course, the 1More S70 work really well.

I’ve tried listening to music on the S70s as well as a sort of on-course experiment. The country, jazz and classic rock I like to listen to all sounded pretty good — not as good as the 1More Sonoflow headphones I reviewed earlier this month, but still more than acceptable for open ear headphones in the great outdoors.

The brilliant thing about open ear headphones is that they let you listen to music, while keeping you cognizant of your surroundings.

If someone is yelling “fore,” you’re going to miss it with noise cancelling earbuds. These give you a chance not to get killed.

I’m not a jogger or street cyclist, but I imagine that the same applies for those sports.

The open ear design is quite comfortable for long periods of time. They don’t get sweaty. Unlike some in-the-ear designs, there’s no occlusion effect with an open ear headset.

When not in use, the S70 earbuds reside in a tough plastic case, which also charges them.

My experience with the batteries is that they last all day and then some.

My one complaint about the 1More S70 earbuds does not really have any substance. It is that they feel as though they will come loose when moving about. They don’t, but I keep thinking that they will. That’s not really fair, but there it is.
