Reader Martin alerted me to the recent acquisition of the UPro GOlf GPS system. It’s a really great looking system that features photo realistic flybys as well as the usual yardage to the center of the green offered by the more usual sort.
The best part is that the “basic mode” course downloads—the ranges without the satellite flybys—are free. The uPro database is well stocked with courses, showing every one of the half dozen tracks I entered as a test.
The Callaway Press release follows:
Callaway Golf Announces Acquisition of uPlay
CARLSBAD, Calif., Jan 05, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE)—Callaway Golf Company today announced it has acquired uPlay, a Carlsbad, California-based developer and marketer of technically superior consumer electronics devices. The transaction, which was completed on December 31, 2008, is not expected to have a material effect on Callaway Golf Company’s 2009 results. Terms of the deal are not being disclosed.
In January 2008, uPlay launched the uPro(TM), a distance measuring device that features state-of-the-art technology to make it the most innovative and effective product of its kind. With features that are unparalleled in the industry, the uPro provides golfers with aerial and satellite photography coupled with GPS technology to clearly show golf course hazards, distance and the overall layout of each hole.
“The acquisition of uPlay makes sense for us on several fronts,” said George Fellows, President and CEO, Callaway Golf. “We’ve said that we would look for acquisitions to help accelerate our growth, and the combination of uPlay with its innovative GPS platform and Callaway Golf’s technical leadership in club and ball development will do just that by creating incremental new business opportunities, while also enhancing golfers’ experiences on the golf course.”
Additional information about the transaction will be provided during the Company’s fourth quarter earnings conference call.

I just got the U-pro last week and am very pleased with it. It is well designed, light weight and easy to use right out of the box. The video flyovers are an excellent innovation. I have used it on my home course and the distance measurments are very accurate when compared with the laser measured sprinkler heads – but you don’t always have a sprinkler head nearby and I have found that the U-pro has influenced my club selction for the better on average 4-5 times per round on a course I have played for 18 years. I can’t wait to try it on new courses when I am travelling. It shouyld be invaluable.
Forget the upro!
Big mistake, the software is flawed with critical dowload issues in PRO Mode.
Their Customer Services are is non existent.
Surprised Callaway is subscribing to an uproven product
