GAM Team Wins Weather-Halted Senior Matches Against Golf Ontario

  ROYAL OAK – Weather caused format changes and eventually halted play, but the GAM Team won 11-9 and retained the cup in the 11th GAM vs. GO (Golf Ontario) Senior Matches Wednesday at Red Run Golf Club.

   Greg Davies, a Michigan Golf Hall of Fame member representing the GAM Team, did double duty and earned 1 ½ points to lead the winning second-day effort.

  He played his scheduled match, and substituted for Mike Ignasiak, who injured his back in first-day action Tuesday, in another match. He did it by playing two players in one round of singles matches in a threesome, essentially his one score matching against the one score of each of the other players. He ended up tied with John Husband to secure a half-point and beat Doug Brophy 3 and 2 for a full point.

  Two matches were halted by poor weather and the leader through nine holes was declared the winner. That resulted in one point for each side as Mike Zoerhoff won a point for the GAM with a 2-up win over Dave Bunker, and a point for GO as David Greenway topped Mitch Wilson of the GAM 1-up.

  Also scoring on the final day of play for the GAM were David LeVan, with a 2-up win over Gawain Robinson, Chuck Christie with a 4 and 3 win over Joe Miszk, and Mark Ericksen with a tie for a half-point against Rob Cowan.

  The GAM won the final day’s singles matches 5-3, breaking a 6-6 tie forged on the format-changed first day of play. 

  The 11th GAM-GO Matches, which started in 2011, were conducted for just the second time since 2019 due to pandemic border restrictions in recent years.

  The matches, designed to promote international sportsmanship among senior golfers from Michigan and Ontario, are played over two days in Ryder Cup fashion with two eight-golfer teams representing their associations. The associations alternate hosting at one of their member clubs. Red Run Golf Club and its classic course hosted the matches for the first time.
