In The Mail: Breakthrough Golf Brava Driver Shaft

Arriving in the mail recently was a Brava driver shaft from Breakthrough Golf Technology (BGT) (company website)

Breakthrough Golf is the latest project by legendary equipment designer and entrepreneur Barney Adams. Last year, I tried out the BGT Stability putter shaft, and found that it offered more benefits than I would have expected.

The Brava driver shaft is the company’s latest project. As with the putter shaft, the lightweight driver shaft is designed for stability and consistency.

That, BGT says, will result in more center strikes and a better face angle. Ultimately those contribute to higher ball speed and smash factor.

Applying my clubmaking skills, I epoxied the shaft into a Cobra sleeve and attached it to a King F8 driver head. To give it a really good test of control and consistency, I trimmed the shaft to be an inch longer than most of my drivers at 46″. I capped it off with a Winn midsize grip.

Unfortunately, my first test didn’t go well. The sleeve turned out to have an inner and outer jacket, and the two separated on my initial swing. I played the rest of that round without a driver.

I re-epoxied the inner to the outer sleeve and it now seems to be working as intended. Still, on my next round with the BGT shaft and Cobra head, I carried a spare driver in the bag.

After one round, I am very much impressed with the Brava shaft. The balls are flying straight as an arrow, with good distance. There is a lot to be said for being in the middle of every fairway.

I’ll have a full review in a couple of weeks.
