The cut has been made and it was a bit of a bloodbath. Half of of the top top thirty players won’t play this weekend. Among the missing: Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia, Zach Johnson, Dustin Johnson, Graeme McDowell, Jason Dufner, Charl Schwartzel, Keegan Bradley, Victor Dubuison, Patrick Reed, Webb Simpson, Hideki Matsuyama, Luke Donald and Graeme Delaet.
2012 Masters Champion Bubba Watson put on a show on Friday, at one point running out a series of five straight birdies. Sadly, because of the relatively limited Masters coverage, much of Watson’s run was untelevised. I wish we could see eight or ten hours of daily coverage as we do with the US Open and Open Championship.
Watson is three shots clear of John Senden, and four clear of the group of Jonas Blixt, Thomas Bjorn, Adam Scott and Jordan Speith.
Five shots back is another interesting group: Fred Couples, Jim Furyk and Jamie Donaldson. Does Fred have it in him to take another Green Jacket? I doubt it, but the notion is fun to think about.
At this point, it seems to me that the tournament is Watson’s to lose. He looks he’s got his entire game together and the only thing between him and another Jacket is his own mind. If he falters, we could see a very memorable result, with a Masters win by one of the Tour’s up and coming stars: Jordan Spieth, Russel Henley, Kevin Stadler, or Jimmy Walker.
The leaderboard after round two of the 2014 Masters is below:
