A large number of students were missing from my classes today, and according to their peers, more than a few had skipped school to buy the first batch of the new Nike Air Jordan 11 Retro.
Says something about the community I teach in, doesn’t it: For some, shoes are more important than education. And of course, it’s the teachers’ fault those kids aren’t learning. I suppose I should have moved class to the mall.
But that wouldn’t have been safe. Southland Mall in nearby Taylor, Michigan experienced a 300 person riot over the shoes. It took police two hours to get it under control.
Seriously? A shoe riot?
I think we need no more evidence that our values are totally screwed.
