Oakhurst Golf & Country Club Hosting Four Ball Championship

Oakhurst Golf & Country Club Hosting GAM Four-Ball Championship

CLARKSTON – Oakhurst Golf & Country Club, an Arthur Hills-designed course built in 1998 that has hosted several Golf Association of Michigan tournaments, will welcome many of the state’s top golfers for the popular 9th GAM Four-Ball Championship presented by Hall Financial on Tuesday, Sept. 27.

A field of 76 two-golfer teams with combined GAM/USGA Handicap Indexes under 10.8 will compete in the 18-hole best-ball competition.

The Oakhurst course, which can play as long as 7,054 yards, weaves through oak, pine, and maple trees and over and around protected wetlands.

Hills incorporated significant risk-reward factors, but also provided some bailout areas for conservative play. The course demands accurate and well-placed tee shots, especially on the shorter par 4 holes.

Among the many tournaments Oakhurst has hosted are the 2010 Michigan Amateur Championship, the 2019 GAM Senior Match Play Championship and the 2021 GAM Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship.

George Bowman is the host professional and has been at Oakhurst since it opened in 1998. Adam Hosler has been the superintendent since 2014. Learn more at invitedclubs.com/clubs/oakhurst-golf-country-club.

The GAM Four Ball teams on Tuesday will be split between a morning wave of tee times and an afternoon wave of tee times. Winners and runners-up are determined in each wave, and a card playoff will decide any ties between the waves in determining an overall winner for the championship.

Last year at Country Club of Jackson, former Michigan State University classmates and teammates, Dan Ellis of East Lansing and Jimmy Dewling of Brighton, shot an 11-under 61 at Country Club of Jackson to win the morning wave and overall championship for the second consecutive year and third time.

They are not in this year’s GAM Four Ball field, but 2019 winners Jack Versau of Portage and Nick Carbary of Kalamazoo and 2018 winners Anthony Provenzola of Ypsilanti and Jon Ripperger of Ann Arbor are playing in this year’s tournament.
