The bizzarely cool May has slowed the growth of the Bermuda grass that lines the fairways at Pinehurst. The USGA wants the rough to be 3 inches tall for the US Open.
The fairways also will apparently be three to four yards more narrow than when Payne Stewart won the Open in 1999.
