The Rocket Mortgage Classic’s inaugural year was 2019. In 2020, thanks to the Coronavirus, it marks the third event in the PGA TOUR’s restart, and will be played without fans.
The winner of the inaugural Rocket Mortgage Classic was journeyman Nate Lashley, who got into the field as a last minute alternate and led wire-to-wire while going 25 under. (Read about the 2019 Rocket Mortgage Classic). Lashley, who has overcome some serious obstacles in his career, was the perfect winner for a city that prides itself on its grit.
Hosting the tournament is the Detroit Golf Club (read the GolfBlogger’s Detroit Golf Club Review). The historic club has two Donald Ross designed courses; portions of both are used for the Rocket Mortgage Classic.
While The Rocket Mortgage Classic is the first PGA TOUR event to be held within the city of Detroit itself, it is not the first PGA TOUR event in the metro area. That title goes to the long-running Motor City Open, which ran from 1948 – 1962. (Read The GolfBlogger’s history of the first Motor City Open.)
The Rocket Mortgage Classic is obviously sponsored by online mortgage broker Rocket Mortgage, which is headquartered in Detroit. The company employs Rickie Fowler as a spokesperson.
A variety of local charities are supported by the Rocket Mortgage Classic. In 2020, however, the tournament is focusing on eliminating the digital divide in Detroit. The goal is to ensure that every Detroit resident has internet access within five years. The digital divide between Detroit and other communities was laid bare by the Coronavirus outbreak, when so much of life — and especially education — went online.
