Sear Leads WVU Golf at VCU Janney Shootout

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Sept. 20, 2016) – Tying the lowest round on school record, Max Sear played a bogey-free 18 holes to lead the West Virginia University golf team on the second and final day of the VCU Janney Shootout at the Country Club of Virginia in Richmond, Virginia, on Tuesday.

Sear fired six birdies to finish six under par with a score of 66, tying the lowest round on record for West Virginia and marking the lowest score posted by a Mountaineer since the team’s reinstatement. The sophomore from Unionville, Ontario, finished tied for seventh place with a two-round score of 71-66=137 for seven under par. His 36-hole total marks the lowest on record for the Mountaineers.

“Max played outstanding today,” said WVU coach Sean Covich. “I’m proud of him and his leadership of our guys. We are continuing to get better, and I’m excited for the future of our program. We’re looking forward to playing in a strong field at Wake Forest next week.”

The Mountaineers finished tied for eighth place, shooting 286 -288=574. After finishing two under in the first round, they were even par in the second to finish two under as a team. Virginia Tech took the team title with a score of 548 for 28 under par, followed by James Madison (558, -18) and East Carolina (560, -16).

Freshman Etienne Papineau also posted a top-20 finish, tying for 18th place. After leading the team through the first round, Papineau struggled on a pair of holes on the back nine but also carded six birdies to finish even par with a 72. He finished with a two-round score of 69-72=141 for three under par.

Alan Cooke tied for 40th with a score of 73-74=147. He birdied hole No. 18 but recorded a trio of bogeys in finishing two over par for the final 18 holes. Cooke was three over in the tournament.

Tristan Nicholls finished the front nine of Friday’s round with a birdie, but carded three bogeys and a double-bogey to end the round four over par with a 76. He posted a two-round score of 73-76=149 for five over par and 49th place.

Jon Ransone shot six over par with a 78 in the final round, carding a 77-78=155 for 11 over par and 69th place.

The Mountaineers return to Virginia next week as the travel to the Primland Collegiate Invitational on Monday and Tuesday. Wake Forest will host the event at Primland Meadows Golf Club in Meadows of Dan, Virginia.
