MANISTEE – Southfield’s Shelly Weiss has been working toward a championship, but coming off a hip replacement in December she didn’t expect it this year.

“This is huge,” said the 57-year-old physical therapist after winning the 22nd GAM Women’s Senior Championship presented by Sullivan Golf and Travel at Manistee Golf & Country Club Monday.

“I knew I was playing high level golf and that I fit into that championship flight, but I didn’t think I would have this big of a win this year. It is definitely my biggest win ever. These girls are the best of the best in the state and I have played against them for a number of years. It took me a while to get to that championship flight level. It took me a while to pull it off. I have to be honest. I’m kind of freaking out.”

After a morning rain delay of 2 ½ hours, Weiss shot a final-round 3-over 74 for a 4-over 146 total and topped Joanne Adams of Detroit, who closed with a 74 for 149. Defending champion Julie Massa of Holt shot a 78 for 150 and third place.

Weiss, who had two birdies, including one on the par 5 No. 18 hole, said she hit her driver well, hit some great iron shots especially in Sunday’s first round and putted well through the tournament.

“It was nerve-wracking just knowing that I had a chance to pull it off,” she said. “I didn’t want to mess it up. I’ve tried really hard to win for several years now.”

Weiss, who played intercollegiate tennis, didn’t take golf up until age 29.

“I started playing when my husband played and to travel and see beautiful venues,” she said. “Then once I started playing, I’m a competitive person and then I wanted to get better at it. I’m thrilled with this. This means a lot to me.”

A field of 65 senior women age 50-plus battled in the championship flight and three other flights over 36 holes of stroke play with gross and net prizes awarded.
