Tiger Should Switch To The Belly Putter :)

I thought that headline would get your attention.

The impetus for such an outrageous suggestion is a Reuters story that confirms what I’ve been for a year or more now: the problem with Tiger is not his swing. It’s his putting. From Reuters:

On the plus side, he leads the money list with earnings of $4,989,158 and, perhaps most crucially of all, he tops the scoring averages with 69.02.

However, with the putter, he lies only 41st in strokes gained—his performance relative to the rest of the tournament field. With putts between five and 10 feet, he languishes 79th in the PGA Tour charts and, from between 10 and 15 feet, he lies a staggering 145th.

When Tiger was winning and seemingly invincible, he made ALL of those putts. He could seemingly will them into the hole.

Now. Not so much.

Here are a few of my past comments on Tiger’s putting:  example here from 2012, here from 2011 where i previously suggested the granny stick, here from 2009 where I suggested his real genius with the putter, not the long game.

Drive for show. Putt for dough. Or Majors, as it were.

  1. Changing putters certainly couldn’t do any harm for his game. Although I am sure I have read before he has tried the belly putter and said he felt his stroke was worse. His has spoken out about them so much it is still hard to see him changing to one now.
