Old Trapper recently sent a bag of their “Old Fashioned” beef jerky for review. It is a great snack for the golf course. Since I don’t need to worry about refrigeration or melting (as I would with a snack bar), I just put some in a baggie and stash it in a golf bag pocket.

The Old Fashioned beef jerky is a little smoky, slightly sweet and a bit salty. I like the savory, sweet and salty combination. It satisfies my sweet tooth without danger of a sugar crash.

Texture is soft and pleasantly chewy. You’re not going to break a tooth, or wear your jaw’s joints out masticating. I imagine that once opened and exposed to air, the pieces might eventually become dry and harder to chew; it is not going to last that long before I consume it, though.

The “Old Fashioned” beef jerky comes in irregular pieces that seem to range from five-inch long strips to more rounded chunks around two inches in diameter.

The family sized package contains 18-ounces of beef jerky. The one I received from Old Trapper for review is the “Old Fashioned” flavor, but the company also offers Peppered, Teriyaki and Hot & Spicy.

I’d like to try the Peppered and Teriyaki. I think those would be quite tasty.

The ingredient list includes beef, brown sugar, water, salt, beef stock, hydrolyzed corn protein, vinegar, unspecified flavorings and sodium nitrite.

In terms of nutrition, a one ounce (28 gram) serving has 70 calories, 11 grams of protein and 6 grams of carbohydrates, five of which are sugars.

Six grams of sugar seems like a lot until you compare it to an energy bar. A half a Clif bar is 34 grams (just slightly more than a serving of Old Trapper Jerky), with 5 grams of protein and 21.5 grams of carbs, including 8.5 grams of sugar.

The one downside of the jerky is the high sodium count. Six hundred grams of sodium is a lot.

Still, if you are sweating a lot while playing, the sodium might need replenishing.

I’ll go with the higher protein and lower carb count every day of the week.
